Re: Dark, Beautiful, Morbid Things
The Seven Deadly Sins
Gluttony
In the Renaissance, eating too much was inextricably connected with lustfulness
What a bestial life! I will not continue noting other horrible, abominable, deplorable vices born from the desire not to work and to greatly satiate oneself: thievery; sacrilege; pimping; poisoning; treating people fraudulently to steal their possessions, honor, life; and selling the honesty of oneself and one’s family.
- Alberti, Della famiglia (1435-44)
Pieter Brueghel the Elder, "Gluttony", c. 1556
Foolish citizens who see your children becoming possessed
by demons and you do not close the taverns at midnight!
You, druggists, who sell pine nut pastries, zuccata, marzipan,
and sweet cakes – and you well know to whom you sell them
and the reason for which they buy them – you don’t think it
necessary to follow your conscience as long as you prosper,
so why don’t you take responsibility for having created wicked
youths? The general rule is if you lose wisdom about spiritual
things, you lose wisdom about temporal things. This provides
the firewood. Sodom and Gomorrah did not have half as much
kindling as Florence.
- St Bernardino of Siena, Sermon to Florentines at Lent (1424)
Lucas Cranach the Elder, "Amorous Old Man and Young Woman" (1522)
Jacob van Walscapelle (1644 – 1727)
Floris Claesz. van Dijick, detail from Still Life with Cheeses
(One of a series of posts in which I'd like to share interesting tidbits from my current research; in this instance, on sin in the early modern period )

Re: Dark, Beautiful, Morbid Things
Dedicated to all the LOA cat ladies I know
In the European Renaissance, cats were associated with superstition, heresy, and witchcraft - for example, the German words for cat (Katze) and heretic (Ketzer) were similar, and a heretic or devil worshipper was branded a "cat kisser" (Katzenkuesser).
On the other hand, in Ancient Egypt, cats were literally worshipped. Bastet, the cat goddess, was a protector goddess of Egypt, and the cats themselves were sacred. The cats of royalty often wore decadent jewels...

Re: Dark, Beautiful, Morbid Things
As already expressed on chat.... I LOVE it!!!!! Oh my goodness.... and I adore Tom Hiddleston!
I can't wait to see it! On your reccommendation, Lunar.
Svankmajer's Alice in Wonderland (which I haven't admittedly seen )
The dream from Wild Strawberries
And Jean Cocteau, Blood of the Poet, selected clips with some unfortunately horrible music
(and yes, by the way: Phantasm already posted gifs from both the above movies I wonder where he's gone? )
fairly accurate depiction of Phanty I'd say

Re: Dark, Beautiful, Morbid Things
(after seeing first two vids)
Is "It" supposed to be mildly funny, or am I just weird?
It ("It" ) is just so unrealistic I don't find it even remotely scary....
(after seeing last vid)
hehehe
