Sleep Deprivation and Mystical Experience Empty Sleep Deprivation and Mystical Experience

Following up on the fasting discussion, I would be interested in people's thoughts on sleep deprivation as a doorway to extra sensory experiences and altered states of mind.

Sleep Deprivation and Mystical Experience Empty Re: Sleep Deprivation and Mystical Experience

Well, I found this:

"Research has shown that the typical effects of acute sleep loss include decreased alertness, reduced performance, memory difficulties and cognitive impairment. In some cases sleep loss may even produce hallucinations. Sleep loss clearly affects mental functioning and reduces higher-level critical thought. This is significant because higher-level critical thinking may limit our ability to experience unusual states of consciousness. Anything that reduces normal mental functioning may increase the likelihood of having a non-ordinary state of consciousness which may be interpreted as a mystical experience."

From, The Desert, Sleep, and Mystical Experience (Psychology Today)

("Cognitive impairment"...that's me these last few days sleepy )

i've found nothing good comes from lack of sleep

i've suffered with insomnia for a long time, its ok at the moment but i think thats down to my new found spirituality as it helps me to go to sleep calm and with a clear mind

if i dont sleep well, i feel disjointed and like i can barely function.. like i'm wading through jelly

my memory becomes awful, and i find it difficult to engage in conversation

Sleep deprivation certainly doesn't make me very clever, personally... today I've caught myself almost washing my hair with shower gel and trying to microwave my lunch in the fridge. Laughing

Insomnia is the most horrible thing... I'm glad it's settled down a bit for you now, Night...*

I think it is no coincidence that sleep deprivation is used as  a form of torture!

*initially was asking this as a question, because I thought you'd told me before that you used to suffer from it but were better now, and now rereading the thread realised...oh...that's where she said it...right there....

Like night eyes I had insomnia for about 2 years :-( I can tell you it makes you go insane. Lack of sleep is very unhealthy and makes u unable to function.

If you want to get into an altered state of mind you can do that by meditation. I've once read somewhere that Buddhist monks can get into a certain state of mind that is so calming that they rest and it counts as sleeping. Would I have been able to do that at the time I wouldn't have been so stressed out Wink

yes of course it makes you dull and stupid and insomnia is a curse, but I'm talking about just say one night without sleep as a pathway to some experience of "otherness"....  my personal experiences have been relatively few but I've experimented a bit, and while the whole night sleepless drives me insane as Sunshine said,

well that's the whole point: doing that for a brief time can kick off a different kind of awareness. Me, I start hallucinating, getting these weird hallucinations that are halfway between sleep and wakefulness because I'm so far over the edge. I ask about others' experiences because I've had "visions" that have later come true. It's quite bizarre, but again, I'm interested in sleep deprivation as a shortcut to your soul, this isn't about just the brain. A lot of writers prefer to write very late at night when they're overtired, because the "creative juices' flow best at that time. Why? Because the normal, analytical brain is turned off and the borders of your conscious and subconscious mind start to fray.

As for meditation I once heard that one hour of meditation is as good as...8? ...hours' sleep. I'd be a bit skeptical of that, but I do know that in some (maybe many) monasteries they do sleep very little, so it's the meditation that keeps them going.

See this Quora question.

https://www.quora.com/Why-do-Buddhist-monks-sleep-so-little

I'm not suggesting we deprive ourselves of sleep on a regular basis, but maybe it is a better "shortcut" to "different' consciousness than say drugs.
